Lipoma & Lump Removal
Dunedin Skin and Surgery Clinic provide assessment and removal of suitable lipomas and selected superficial lumps under local anaesthetic.
A lipoma is a common benign growth of fatty tissue that forms under the skin. Lipomas are usually soft, slow-growing, mobile and painless. They can occur anywhere on the body, but are commonly found on the back, neck, shoulders, arms and trunk.
Most lipomas are harmless and do not require treatment. However, removal may be considered if a lipoma is painful, increasing in size, causing discomfort, affecting movement, catching on clothing, causing cosmetic concern, or if the diagnosis is uncertain.
During consultation, Dr Sharma will assess the lump and discuss whether it is suitable for removal in the clinic. In some cases, an ultrasound, biopsy or referral may be recommended before surgery, particularly if the lump is large, deep, rapidly growing, painful, fixed to deeper tissues or has unusual features.
Lipomas are most commonly removed by surgical excision. This involves making an incision over the lump, removing the lipoma and closing the wound with sutures or skin closure strips. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic, and patients can usually go home the same day.
Liposuction may be considered in selected cases, particularly for larger or multiple lipomas. However, it may not remove the entire capsule and may carry a higher chance of recurrence. Dr Sharma will discuss the most suitable option based on the size, location and clinical features of the lipoma.
Before any procedure, the expected recovery, wound care, scarring, risks and follow-up will be discussed clearly. Patients are given aftercare advice and reviewed if needed.
