Meet Dr Sharma

Dr Niranjan Sharma is a Dunedin-based General Practitioner and procedural doctor with a special interest in skin cancer assessment, dermatology, dermoscopy and minor surgical procedures.

Dr Sharma obtained his medical degree in Nepal before completing further advanced surgical training in gastrointestinal and organ transplant surgery in Japan, where he also completed a PhD in this field. He worked as an Assistant Surgeon in Japan before moving to New Zealand, where he later worked as a Surgical Registrar in Wellington.

He subsequently chose General Practice as a career, valuing the opportunity to provide continuity of care, build long-term relationships with patients and offer practical, person-centred medical care. He moved to Dunedin with his family in 2000.

Dr Sharma is a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. He has also undertaken additional training in skin cancer medicine, skin cancer surgery, dermoscopy and dermatology, including Fellowship training through the Australian Institute of Dermatology.

At Dunedin Skin and Surgery Clinic, Dr Sharma provides assessment and care for a range of skin concerns, including skin cancer checks, mole assessments, general dermatology, hair and scalp conditions, skin cancer surgery, benign skin lesions, cysts, lipomas and other lumps and bumps. He also performs nail surgery, including the Vandenbos procedure for selected ingrown toenails, needle-free no-scalpel vasectomy, circumcision, frenuloplasty and frenulectomy under local anaesthesia.

Dr Sharma is a WellSouth Primary Health Network accredited GP with Special Interest in Skin.

Outside medicine, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, tramping, travelling and meeting people from different walks of life. He speaks English, Nepali, Japanese and Hindi.
